Un día como hoy, en 1947, fallecía el torero español Manuel Rodríguez, "Manolote". En España, la gente se dividía entre los que apoyaban a este torero y los que preferían al torero mexicano Carlos Arruza. Los partidarios de Arruza inventaron una cancioncilla que decía: "¡Ay Manolete! Si no sabes torear ¿pa´qué te metes?". Frase que hemos adoptado para referirnos a alguien que intenta solucionar algo y lo estropea aún más. O alguien que se atreve a hacer algo y después de arrepiente porque le da demasiado miedo.
On a day like today, in 1947, the Spanish bullfighter Manuel Rodriguez, alias "Manolete" died. In Spain, therewere people who supported him, and others who supported the Msxican bullfighter Carlos Arruza. The ones in favour of Arruza came up with a ditty that went: ¡Ay Manolete! Si no sabes torear, ¿pa' qué te metes?" (Is you don´t know how to fight, why you even try?). Over the years, we have used this sentence to refer to someone who tries to fix something but ends up making it worse. Or to refer to someone who dares to do something but then he/she regrets it because it's too scary for them.
